Physical Description

Name of Artifact: Lotus Temple

Size: 26 meters tall and occupies an area of about 26 acres (105,000 meters squared)

The Artifact is made out of: The petals, which are the main features of this temple are made out of white marble

It can be found: at Mandir Marg, Kalkaji, south delhi in India

Provenance

The Lotus Temple was built in 1980. In 1953 the major fund for this unique temple was donated by Adishir Rustampur. He donated all his life savings for this purpose. This temple was created in Kalkaji, south Delhi in India. The architecture of this temple was designed by Fariborz Sahba. Another key person involved with the Lotus Temple, is Bab. Bab is a Persian who proclaimed himself the forerunner to prepare the way and herald, the appearance of a new spiritual figure. Without his attempt this temple wouldn’t have been accomplished. This temple is probably used to worship and also Baha’i faith followers take it as a place to show their devotion and how much they respect and believe in this faith. This temple is mainly used by the Baha’i faith followers, though it is visited by a high range of people. It is one of India’s main tourist attractions.

Significance

This artifact belongs to the Baha’i Faith. There is also another Baha’i temple in Wilmette, Chicago, America. This Artifact belongs at the museum because; first, it’s the worlds only lotus shaped temple. Second, the architecture of this temple has a mix of many different religions, and last but not least this temple has a very unique and amazing architecture, with petals which are made out of white marble. The aspect of religion which this temple falls into is architecture. Another example of architecture from another religion is the Santa Maria in Trastevere, Italy. This aspect of religion, religious architecture is important in many religions but not all. This has a lot of importance because; many people express a lot of their devotion by special architecture towards their religion, to show focus for worship, and also these architectures can lead to unknown history. Architecture is a very important aspect of religion.
